Asus ROG Ally X Leaks: Powering Up With Double the Battery

As we move closer to the launch date, the Asus ROG Ally X leaks have given us a lot to look forward to. The handheld device is set to launch on June 2, 2024, and while Asus has kept mum about what we can expect, the rumors haven’t been as discrete. The upcoming ROG Ally X’s battery life is probably set to be its most attractive feature considering the company is about to double its capacity to 80Wh, an astounding leap that would place it squarely on top as the largest battery on any handheld. The ROG Ally X’s hardware will also get a port upgrade with an additional USB-C port that flaunts USB4 speeds.

Asus ROG Ally X Leaks Introduce a Device You Will Not Want to Miss

According to The Verge, the ROG Ally X’s hardware has received some minor changes that will increase the comfort of using the device, but major details like the chipset and display tech are unchanged. The Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip from the older ROG Alley model isn’t going anywhere and the 7-inch, FHD 1080p screen with a 120Hz refresh rate will still guarantee your viewing experience is top-notch. Both features were appreciated in the previous gaming device so we understand why they haven’t tried to fix what wasn’t broken. 

Still, the Asus ROG Ally X leaks don’t suggest we’re getting the same gadget repackaged in a different skin—there’s more to expect from the handheld gaming device.

The ROG Ally X Hardware Gets Some Upgrades With Battery and Memory

Online platform VideoCardz got its hands on the most comprehensive summary of the Asus ROG Ally X’s full specs list and that’s our main source of all the leaks we have today. The two biggest upgrades to the device are the improvements in favor of the ROG Ally X’s battery life and memory. The battery on the device is being upgraded from 40 Wh to 80 Wh, which will vastly improve the duration that you can game without having to look for a power source. 

The ROG Ally X hardware support for its memory is being upgraded to 24GB of LPDDR5(X)-7500 memory. This is a significant step up from the previous model which had 16GB of LPDDR5-6400 memory. The ROG Ally X battery life and memory will easily push its specs above its 2023 model as well as major competitors on the market. The MSI Claw has a 53 Wh battery and 16GB LPDDR5-6400 memory capacity. The Valve Steam Deck OLED has the same memory as the Claw, with a 50 Wh battery. The Lenovo Legion Go has a 49.2 Wh battery capacity and an LPDDR5(X)-7500 memory capacity. 

The upgraded handheld supports a different SSD standard from its predecessor as well, the M.2 NVMe 2280 versus the M.2 NVMe 2230 in the older model. The storage is also getting a bump up from 512GB to 1TB. The Asus ROG Ally X leaks certify the company’s ambitions to embrace all the feedback they received on their previous model. Asus senior product manager Gabriel Meng told The Verge, “We think about battery and storage, graphics and memory, ports… our goal is to fit as many of those as possible into a device like this.” 

Slightly Bigger, Infinitely Cooler: Asus ROG Handheld Specs

The Asus ROG Ally X leaks suggest that the gaming gadget will be slightly heavier and thicker to accommodate all the internal changes they’ve made moving parts around. The device should weigh 678 g or 1.49 lbs, up from 608 g or 1.34 lbs and you should find it feeling slightly thicker in your hands. 

The internal fan of the ROG Ally X’s hardware is supposed to be 23 percent smaller and the fins 50 percent thinner. These changes combine to result in a system that has a 10 percent improvement in airflow. Overheating is a common issue with gaming devices and while Asus has external fans that you can attach to cool down the system, it’s nice to have a device that can self-regulate. Apart from the color switch from white to black, the Asus ROG Ally X full specs list also indicates that a USB-C 4.0 port is replacing the external GPU port. This new port should support external GPUs as well as boost the charging capabilities. 

Wrapping up the Asus ROG handheld specs, we also hear that the device will sport a Precision D-Pad and minor design changes to address ergonomic comfort. None of the Asus ROG Ally X leaks have any concrete insight into the price. We’re assuming it will remain unchanged at $799 USD as suggested earlier, but we’ll get confirmation about this in less than two weeks. According to rumors, the device will be announced on June 2, 2024. Other leaks indicate an official presentation will take place at the Computex show held in Taiwan between June 4 and 7, 2024. June should be a good month for Asus if these specs are to be believed.
