Experts reveal the way you HOLD your phone affects the signal – and there’s a little-known trick to instantly boost it

EXPERTS have revealed the way you should hold your phone to get the best reception – and there’s a little known trick to boost it.

Broadcasting and communications regulator Ofcom has revealed their tips on how people can get the best out of their cell.

In London it can be hard to get great reception as you are surrounded by tall buildings, or it can be tricky in rural areas with limited coverage.

But there are hacks to try and beat the dead zones, with one easy trick a sure fire way to boost your signal.

Ofcom suggests that holding your phone further away from your head can boost reception.

That means, if you want to make a call, you’ll likely need to use the speakerphone or a Bluetooth connected headphone in your ear.

Alternatively, you can make a call or send a message across the internet, rather than though the airwaves.

They say: “This can be a good solution if your home or workplace has poor mobile coverage but a good wifi connection.

“Some networks allow you to do this automatically using ‘wifi calling’, while others may require you to load a dedicated app.”

Ofcom says that reception can also change depending on your location and the type of antenna in a phone.

On their website, Ofcom say that old style basic handsets can get better reception for texting and calling than smartphones.

Finally, Ofcom suggests checking the coverage of an area by using a coverage checker on their website, but also asking the provider before you sign up.

They say: “Some coverage checkers offered by mobile network providers now let you specify which phone you plan to use, so you can find out if it is likely to give you good reception.”

Ofcom also suggests using consumer law to your advantage.

They say: “Under consumer contract regulations you may have the right to cancel your contract without charge within the first 14 calendar days of signing up.

“So, check your mobile coverage during this first 14 days to ensure it is satisfactory – if not, you may exit the contract. Some operators provide additional guarantees beyond the first 14 days – check before you buy.”

Turn on Wi-Fi calling

First, grab your phone and open your settings.

Click on the Mobile Service tab, near the top of the screen.

Here, you will see an option for Wi-Fi Calling – which will probably say ‘Off’ next to it.

If you click on the Wi-Fi Calling tab, there will be a toggle to switch it on.

If you click the toggle, and it turns green, you have successfully switched on Wi-Fi Calling.

I don’t see it in my settings?

If you don’t see the Wi-Fi Calling tab in your settings, then your phone might be too old to support it.

The feature is usually only available on iPhones or newer Android models.
